5 Steps to Safely Removing Snow from a Flat Roof

When winter rolls around, there aren’t many better sights than fresh layer of snow on a morning. However, despite how much we love looking at a Winter Wonderland, excess snow can cause havoc on your flat roof.

Accumulation of snow on a flat roof can lead to water ponding, disfiguration of the roof membranes and more serious issues that could result in total collapse of the roof. When left unmoved, snow will melt and can seep into the crevices of the roof. When it refreezes, the water expands and can cause damage to the structure of the roof.

In order to avoid these problems, it’s always recommended to clear your flat roof of snow as soon as you can. Here is our 5 step process to safely removing snow from your roof.

Clear the Area

Before you remove any snow from the roof, you’ll want to make sure there are no objects or people around the perimeter of the roof that could be damaged or hurt by the weight of falling snow.

Remove the Excess

Use a plastic snow shovel to start removing as much excess snow as possible. Avoid metal shovels as these are more likely to damage the roof membranes. Make sure you are stable on the roof before you start shovelling.

Sweep the Roof

Once the excess snow is removed, use a stiff broom or rake to clear the surface of the roof. Try not to dig the broom or rake into the roof as this will damage the surface. It’s also important to make sure the roof is swept evenly, so there are no parts holding extra weight.

Apply Melting Spray

In winter when snow can be expected at any time, it’s a good idea to apply a de-icing or melting spray to the roof after you’ve removed all the snow. This will prevent further snow accumulation and damage.

Clear Gutters and Drains

Once your roof is clear of all snow, don’t forget about your gutters and drains. Snow will melt and is likely to build up in these, preventing a path to properly drain water from the roof. This can lead to water pooling and leaks.
