Famous Roofs From Around the World

Roofs are a fundamental part of any building. They are one of the most important components of any house, office, temple or palace! They are the cherry on top of the cake, completing a building and protecting it from the elements.

Roofs as a shelter are one of the most important things we need as a species to survive and over the years, we have experimented with design and material, creating what some would call construction masterpieces. Although intricate, well-designed, expensive roofing isn’t suitable for everything, we’re taking a look at some of the most famous roofs from around the world.

Sydney Opera House, Austrailia

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most recognisable buildings in the world. Its iconic design attracts tourists from all over, and its roof is quite something to behold. It is made up of thousands of pre-cast concrete sections that are pieced together and held by steel cables. The weight of this roof is impressive and it took around 14 years to build and complete. Its glistening appearance has captured the attention of many, and still will in years to come.

Thean Hou Temple, Malaysia

This building is located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and is a 6-tiered temple for the Chinese sea goddess, Tian Hou. Perhaps the most impressive thing about this building is the roof. The spectacular roofs boast astonishing colours and intricate carvings. It combines modern architectural techniques with traditional designs, making it an iconic piece of construction.

Chrysler Building, USA

This American Skyscraper is famous for being the world’s tallest steel-supported brick building. It is made from a steel frame filled with masonry with metal cladding for decoration. The entire construction contains a whopping 3,862 windows. Located in the big apple, the Chrysler Building has a roof that’s 1,250 feet (380m). This impressive height has made it a world-famous construction.

Taj Mahal, India

The Taj Mahal or Crown of Palace is a marble mausoleum located in India. It is also one of the most recognisable buildings in the world and attracts an abundance of tourists every year. The symmetrical white building is topped with a marble dome which only adds to the grandeur of this building.

Kings Cross Station, UK

There are a number of famous roofs in the London area both historical and modern, but the roof of King’s Cross Station is a recognisable construction. It is particularly effective from the inside of the building, and the huge roof as a whole, some say, has become British tradition. The semi-circular vaulted concourse stems from the ground up and across the entire roof’s interior. The construction also looks pretty incredible from an outside bird’s eye view. There are other parts of the building which have some different well-known roofing in different forms.

Types of Roofing

These world-renowned roofs offer an array of exciting architectural designs and constructions using an abundance of interesting materials and a large budget. These are great for large landmarks, but roofs have also evolved well for smaller domestic and commercial buildings. With different types of roofing being experimented with over the years, there has been an increase in the number of flat roofs because they are inexpensive and easy to repair.
