Although this roofing has been popular for years, there are a lot of people asking, exactly what is EPDM Roofing? We’re here to tell you.
EPDM roofing is a type of rubber roof that is both hard-wearing and easy to maintain, making it a fantastic choice for commercial buildings as well as domestic properties.
What is EPDM Rubber?
EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) M-class rubber is a synthetic, man-made and most importantly, extremely strong material, which is used to make roofing supplies. The two main ingredients of this rubber, ethylene and propylene, are derived from oil and natural gases.
What Does EPDM Roofing Look Like?
There are a few different kinds of EPDM roofing, so they do differ slightly by make. Generally, EPDM rubber is around the thickness of a penny, and is usually a soft black or dark grey colour. They are smooth on the surface and are often installed as a whole and cover the whole area of a roof.
The material is lightweight, stretchy, and gives a smooth complementary finish to all roofs.
Where and Why is EPDM Used?
EPDM works particularly well with flat or low-sloped roofs. The sleek look of the finished product means you can put it next to both slate and tiled roofs. Rubber roofing can also be used on many kinds of building including commercial and domestic.
One of the reasons why EPDM is used so often, is because it is extremely resilient and robust. It is waterproof, even if there is a seam, and can withstand most extreme weather conditions be it rain, snow or wind. They often have a life expectancy of up to 50 years and take little or no maintenance. Plus, Firestone also offer a 10-year warranty on their roofing!
One thing you don’t have to worry about with rubber roofing is the chance of a fire. EPDM rubber roof membrane is fire resistant and can cope in very hot and very cold temperatures.
What’s more, for all those eco-friendly supporters out there, rubber roofing can help you go green! It takes little energy to make, is 100% recyclable and can conserve heat and reduce energy usage at home.
